How We Work

Large-scale change across the energy system requires coordinated pressure across policy, finance, industry, and regulation. We organise networks of people and organisations to make that happen by:

Finding leverage points

Change in complex systems requires finding the right pressure points at the right time. We build a deep understanding of the political, legal, economic, and financial dynamics shaping energy systems–and who holds power to change them.

Sometimes those leverage points are in government policy processes. Sometimes in corporate or financing decisions that cascade through supply chains. Other times they arise from regulatory or legal settings that shape industry behaviour. We focus on the points where well-timed interventions can create ripples through the system and accelerate progress.

Building collective power

Once we identify where change can happen, we bring together the diverse actors needed to make it happen. Large-scale environmental transformation requires different contributions: research that highlights problems and solutions, detailed policy and financial analysis, sophisticated campaigns and grassroots organising, high-level diplomacy and government engagement.

We identify the skills, relationships and leadership required and then convene and coordinate efforts so the whole becomes greater than the sum of its parts - all in support of a safe climate and healthy environment.

Research and Analysis

We analyse energy systems, map influence and power relationships, and identify opportunities for transformative interventions.

Strategy Development

Building on our research and analysis, we design multi-partner strategies to achieve lasting outcomes.

Convening Networks

We bring together and organise diverse actors. Sometimes informally, sometimes through formal networks, but always with purpose.

Coordinated Interventions

We drive campaigns and coordinated efforts that unlock broad transformation across the energy system.

Grantmaking and Capacity Building

We fund organisations, and provide coaching and other forms of capacity building support.

We’re continually scanning the horizon for new opportunities, strategies, tactics and business models to drive impact towards our mission.

What We Do

Accelerating the global energy transition

We work to shift the systems that determine how energy decisions are made. Across four programs, we focus on scaling renewable energy, reforming the financial rules and norms that shape investment, decarbonising transport and industrial supply chains, and strengthening the movement power needed to accelerate a fast, fair transition.

Grantmaking

The Sunrise Project provides strategic grants to partners that share the goal of accelerating the transition to renewable energy. Around two-thirds of the funds we receive are re-granted.
